We have modern, well-equipped facilities and are located within beautiful countryside. My grandmother had no formal background in teaching, but she was well-educated, and a skilled linguist and musician, and together she and Neill decided to start Summerhill.

It's a place that minimises the authoritarian elements and maximises the development of community and really caring about the other people. I am very proud to be part of Summerhill School and look forward to even greater successes as our efforts really come to fruition.
I left at 15 and at college I had to work even harder. What if any had wanted to go to mainstream schools? Adults are not there to create things for the children to do- they need to create things for themselves.
This is being shared with the rest of the staff. I sent a letter to the Greenwich Village Voicein New York, disclaiming any affiliation with any American school that calls itself a Summerhill school.
Most of the children board during the term time, though there are day pupils as well. They are beginning to look for alternative answers to mainstream schooling.
I suppose I should be writing to the newspapers and things, but I haven't the energy. Living in a small, inter-related community "means you have to take responsibility for your own actions, and that means everything from the clothes you wear to how you treat others. They have three grown-up children.
